- This essay investigates the circulation of Oscar Wilde's prose and poems in Japan from the late Meiji period to the end of Taisho period,<superscript>1</superscript> examining the diverse Japanese readings and adaptations of Wilde: a dangerous socialist, a modern poet, a sentimental humanist and essayist, a decadent aesthete, and a martyr to beauty.
