Abstract

The article focuses on research into drugs that could prevent noise-induced hearing loss. It states that excessive noise can stress inner-ear hair cells which convert sound waves into electrical signals and mentions research has found loud noises can result in the production of active oxygen and nitrogen species. It comments that antoxidant mimetics and precursors can combat free radicals and reduce permanent threshold shifts. It examines the role of magnesium in hearing loss prevention.
