Abstract

The author comments on a paper by archaeologist Håkon Glørstad on the important role of boats, specifically log boats, in the colonization of Norway. He argues against the use of recent umiak-equipped Inuit and upper Palaeolithic cultures with no surviving coastlines as a reference for the colonization of Norway. He also discusses boatbuilding technology and kinship and demography during the Mesolithic period.
