Abstract

The article focuses on African American community reactions to the acquittal of neighborhood defense member George Zimmerman in the shooting death of black teenager Trayvon Martin. It states that black pastors who spoke to their congregations after the acquittal urged their congregations that the controversy on the death of Martin and Zimmerman's acquittal shouldn't fade from public awareness. It mentions that protests, mostly peaceful, across the U.S. focused on police profiling, stand-your-ground laws, and gun violence. It comments on unemployment among blacks and the decline in black family wealth from 2007 to 2010 and talks about the U.S. Justice Department's increase in hate-crime convictions from 2009-2013.
