Abstract

The article discusses the U.S. forest products industry as of January 1969 as companies seek to diversify in order to cope with the industry's historical cycles of overcapacity and falling prices. It notes that the industry still ranks low in its five-year return on equity and on invested capital despite a turnaround in 1968 after a bleak 1967. A table is presented on the profitability and growth of forest products companies including Crown Cork & Seal, Boise Cascade and Scott Paper.
