Abstract
- Social scientists have long been interested in the conditions under which the initiation of social change will take place. It has fallen to the social psychologist in particular to attempt predictions of individual differences in behavior directed toward a changing of the social structure. The concept of internal versus external control of reinforcement may be of value in predicting social action behavior. This dimension distributes individuals according to the degree to which they attribute what happens to themselves to their own behaviors or characteristics versus the degree to which they attribute what happens to themselves to forces outside their own control. In addition to the findings from studies of expectancy changes, it has been hypothesized that individuals differ in a stable personality characteristic of whether they expect reward in a large variety of situations to be the function of external forces or their own behavior or attributes. Approaches to the assessment of individual differences along these lines with children have been developed by many psychologist.
