Indication that most of northern and central Europe was colonized from a refuge in the Carpathian Mountains; Determination of colonization roots based on the distribution of two common cpDNA haplotypes; Confirmation of the locations of other previously identified refugia; Proposal of Southern Spain and Turkey as unconfirmed refugial areas for alder.
