Abstract
- The article comments on the decline of libraries since the 1970s. It assessed the impact of budget cuts on library purchases. The author argues that the new focus on popular entertainment books and videos was believed to increase circulation. This essay also assessed the negative consequences of the decline of libraries for the serious reader and researchers. It was believed that the decline of public libraries started in the 1970s largely as a response to severe budget cutbacks in the budget approved by the U.S. government.
