Abstract

The article discusses the spread of high-density throughout England in the first decade of the 21st century. It is written in response to the article "Flats, Higher Densities and City-centre Living in England: A Response to Evans and Unsworth," by Barry Goodchild in the present issue of the journal. The authors argues that Goodchild's belief that the development of a buy-to-let apartment market and increased desire to live in city centers among the British populace have impacted housing density is correct, but his focus on English city centers is erroneous. Instead, they defend their notion that the rise in higher density housing was largely a factor of government planning policies based on economic concerns, particularly those regarding brownfield areas.
