An introduction is presented in which the editor discusses various reports within the issue on topics including different approaches in calculating the amount of access network cables and fibres and the number of required network elements for Fibre To The Home (FTTH) networks, protection in passive optical networks (PONs) at minor investment cost, and problems related to the optical systems for telecommunication applications.
