Abstract

This article presents a narrative of the author's experience as a non-Communist deputy minister of defense of Poland in 1987. It recalls how the author got a call from Jan Parys, the first civilian, non-Communist minister of defense of Poland, asking him to be his deputy. It describes actions taken by WSI, the Polish military intelligence and counter-intelligence, in tainting the reputation of the author. It offers an overview of the responsibilities of being a deputy minister of defense. It presents the reasons of Lech Malesa, newly elected president of Poland, for alienating most of his former associates.
