Abstract
- The article reports on the household ownership of equities in the U.S. The U.S. households' ownership of equities hit an all-time high in 1968, when equities represented 49% of all households' portfolios of stocks, bonds and cash. But then began a long slide. By 1990 equities had fallen to 23.9%, a postwar low, after a decade during which individuals put most of their savings into homes and short-term assets like CDS. But due to the continuing decline in interest rates, coupled with a strong performance by the stock market, households are again loading up on equities, which have risen to 30% of household portfolios.
