Abstract

The author reflects on the use of amplitude integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) in neonatal intensive care units. He suggests that the aEEG is an attractive way to assess the integrity of the central nervous system of infants who are critically ill when other monitoring techniques are not available. He argues that additional research on the aEEg and the relationship between aEEG data and early childhood outcomes is needed.
