Abstract
- Diversification may be the only growth opportunity left for some retailers in the '90s, but it's not for everyone. Managers must know what core competencies their company possesses, if any, and how to exploit them. And they must have deep pockets for short- and long-term investment. Portfolio retailers do not always succeed, especially if their diversification efforts are unfocused, but those that do offer insight into how the strategy should be implemented.
