Abstract

This paper focuses on two main objectives: the analysis of changes in the work orientation during the period from 2003 to 2012 and the correlation between work and value orientations (traditional vs. modern orientation). Survey data indicate a prevalence of readiness for "flexible" work patterns and "self-employment" or starting one's own business in the period of economic growth. On the other hand, our findings indicate a decrease in "flexible" work orientation in the periods of economic crisis. Additionally, the empirical findings of this research show that the readiness for "flexible work arrangements" is associated with modern values, while the willingness to accept any paid work is connected to traditional values. The analysis is based on the data collected within three empirical researches (2003, 2007, and 2012) conducted by the Institute for Sociological Research of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade.
