Abstract

The article discusses the role that the social worker, executive director of the organization the National Catholic Conference for Interracial Justice (NCCIJ) and acting director of the Catholic Interracial Council of Chicago (CICC) Mathew Hall Ahmann played in leading the Catholic Church in the U.S. civil rights movement during the late 1950s and early 1960s. An overview of the role that Catholic sisters, or nuns, played in efforts toward interracial social justice is provided.
