Abstract

The article discusses the history of Harper's Magazine, with a particular focus on its role in historical narratives of literary taste and capitalistic production. According to the author, the ambiguous representation of Harper's formed by these two narratives is the means by which genteel literary history has survived into the 21st century. Topics discussed include Harper's participation in the humor and advertising industries and editors Henry Mills Alden and John Kendrick Bangs.
