THE STRUCTURE OF INDICES OF SOCIAL MOBILITY AND INHERITANCE.

Three components of indices of social mobility and social inheritance (immobility) are identified, resulting in a procedure which allows one to systematically construct indices incorporating particular social priorities. The procedure is also useful analytically, since the sociological point of view reflected by a given index is made more apparent when the index is decomposed into its constituent parts.
