Abstract
- I distinguish between pre-feudal societies (what Max Weber calls patrimonial societies), feudal societies, and post-feudal societies where there is an institutionalization of checks and balances in society in order to preserve liberty, of which America is a prime example. I describe the evolution of social solidarity in these societies with emphasis on the relations between collectivistic and individualistic societies and authoritarian and narcissistic personalities. The evolution from gemeinschaft (community) to gesellschaft (association) is discussed with emphasis on effects on social solidarity and personal relationships. The social basis for anxiety is then discussed, with ramifications for nationalism, for authoritarian and narcissistic nihilism, and for love and hate as factors in social solidarity. Running Head: Emotions, Social Solidarity, and Nationalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
