Abstract

• Special education research and practice has had an inextricable link to case law. Recent legal developments in special education underscore the need for schools to focus on the following areas: • Individualized education programs: Meeting strict review timelines, scheduling meetings, and managing conflicts for staff are secondary to the importance of parental participation. • Discipline and behavior management: Managing the behaviors of students with disabilities continues to be a problem for schools as does the issue of disability-based harassment. • Providing services to students with autism: Schools need to ensure methods to educate students with autism are research based. • Participation in extracurricular activities: Schools need to provide students with disabilities equal access to extracurricular activities.
