Abstract
- Bluetooth technology offers great opportunities for a variety of applications and has good market prospects. However, numerous publications and test results give rise to some questions about the pairing process and security of confidential information transmitted via Bluetooth. Therefore, to ensure an acceptable level of protection we propose a novel countermeasure that will help to avert Man-In-The-Middle (MITM) attacks. This paper focuses its attention on MITM attacks in Bluetooth pairing and suggests a countermeasure that will contribute to preventing the MITM attacks by proposing new precautionary steps, which will be integrated into the Just Works (JW) association model of Bluetooth Secure Simple Pairing (SSP). The proposed model will start by asking both devices about I/O capabilities, then exchanging a key between the devices based on the answer of each device, in which there will be a computational process following the exchange process between the devices, which are trying to pair. Finally, we will provide a thorough demonstration of the new method and its results. Then we will illuminate the proposed steps and delineate the various stages of it, which are integrated into JW model. This would optimistically deliver a roadmap to formulate a substantially effective countermeasure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
