Abstract

The article discusses the concept of a nation and the rhetoric on nationalism in Canada. The founding of Canada in 1867, the status of Québec as a nation, and the Clarity Act regarding Québec's separation from Canada are mentioned. Additional topics addressed include sovereignty, the rhetoric of aboriginal nationalism which began with the Dene Declaration of 1975 recognizing the Dene peoples as a nation, the standard use of the term First Nations after 1980, and relations between the First Nations and the administration of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
