Abstract
- Explores the spiritual creed of the former U.S. President Benjamin Franklin that lies in a virtuous, morally fortified and pragmatic version of deism befitting him to be the first great American exemplar of the Enlightenment and its Age of Reason. Discomfort in embracing the Enlightenment-era creed that reason and the study of nature can tell about the Creator; Clarification of his religious beliefs through a series of essays and letters; Belief of a general providence in most deists; Hints of irony and self-deprecation in Franklin's droll recollection written at the age 79.
