Abstract

Prahalad and Hamel posit that companies conduct activities that relate to their core competencies and either divest or outsource other activates. Core competencies drive dynamic capabilities. When Core Competencies of the Firm was published, it coincided with the breakup of most conglomerates. In recent years, the driving force of technology has forced companies to develop new capabilities but have some gone too far looking outside their industries into areas including self-driving automobiles, space travel, and even entertainment. This paper posits that these endeavors violate the lessons of core competencies and are not a prudent corporate strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
