Return of the Bear: Learning from Intelligence Analysis of the USSR to Better Assess Modern Russia.

The article presents case studies of the occurrence of Cuban Missile Crisis, the Soviet invasions of Czechoslovakia and of Afghanistan, and the collapse of the Soviet Union or the USSR in an effort to better assess modern Russia. The case of Czechoslovakia and Afghanistan both show the need for analysts to work to understand the distinct construction of cost-benefit analyses of Russia. The Soviet collapse underlines the unique traits of Russian society which must be taken into account.
