Abstract

The article discusses Canadian sprint kayaker Karen Furneaux's learned lessons on life's unpredictability and her own true strength during the course of her and her team's journey to the Olympics. Topics covered include her initial setbacks in training, her discovery of the mind's power to control thoughts and behaviors, and its help in overcoming feelings of emptiness and in winning championships. Also noted is Furneaux's later coaching of people on her approach to self-belief and success.
