Abstract

The digital revolution has significantly changed the way humanities scholars deal with newspapers: An increasing number of newspapers are being digitized, making larger quantities of text available to researchers for analysis. Digital formats not only allow easier access to the text, the sheer volume of data also requires recourse to methods that can perform automated or semi-automated structuring of texts. This article shows how large corpora of data can be meaningfully analyzed by combining computer-based methods and the close reading of texts. Here the question arises how close reading and distant reading methods can be combined when analyzing large amounts of text, and how historical narratives are created from this combination. Based on this research question, the article describes the methodological procedure and gives an overview of the results that could be achieved with the help of the qualitative software Atlas.ti and comparative discourse-historical argumentation analysis, a type of discourse analysis.
