Abstract

The article reports that since its introduction in 1997. it's largely been the ideas and innovations of small independent shops that have evolved DVD into the unique story-telling medium that its become. But as the format reaches maturity, the "front-end" services that have defined it--authoring menu design, subtitling, extras are increasingly being handled by Hollywood's age old media-services stalwarts. Both Deluxe and Technicolor each owned by European congloms now--rank among the top houses for stamping DVDs, packaging them, then shipping them to stores.
