Abstract

Key Takeaways: After finding nitrosamines in its water system, the City of Houston studied how polymer coagulants and different stages of water purification affect nitrosamine formation. Results showed that as polymer dose increased and as water backwash or recycled water was mixed in, nitrosamine levels increased. Utilities should remove nitrosamine precursors from source water and optimize polymer dosage to reduce nitrosamines in the purification plant and drinking water distribution system.
