Abstract
- The article talks about the 150th anniversary of Treaty No. 1, an agreement made by the Government of Canada with the Anishinabek and Swampy Cree of southern Manitoba in 1871. It mentions that the arrival of settler colonialism (the process and structure of dispossessing indigenous peoples of their land base and replacing them with invasive settlers who assert their own narratives of belonging) led rapidly to the signing of the Numbered Treaties to extinguish aboriginal title to the lands of the Prairie West.
