Abstract

Only after the 1967 war, Ram argues, when Israel dealt a crushing defeat to its Arab neighbors and cannabis became associated with white Euro-American hippies, did hashish use become more widely socially acceptable for Israeli Jews. Still, it is frequently insightful and enjoyable, offering much to those interested in the intersection of cannabis with twentieth-century dynamics of policing and racialization in Palestine/Israel, the eastern Mediterranean, and beyond. Between 1917 and 1967 - the half-century covered by I Intoxicating Zion i , Haggai Ram's history of hashish in Palestine/Israel - shifting borders and changing authorities complicated this trade.
