Abstract
- Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is a pathologic entity that was once described as an uncommon variation of odontogenic keratocyst, although the 2005 World Health Organization classification considers this as distinct pathologic entity due to its diverse biological behaviors. Literature on OOC describes a greater prevalence in White men aged 30 years and older and reports its low growth rate and aggressiveness as responsible for the lower recurrence rate. Because of its asymptomatic clinical course, the diagnosis may be delayed, increasing morbidity associated with the disease. The objective is to present a case of a distinguished OOC in the mandibular posterior region of a 30-year-old woman who presented with a significant odontogenic infection associated to the pathologic cavity, which was not noted before. The lesion was treated with enucleation and the mandible was reinforced using internal rigid fixation. After 1 year of follow-up there are no signs of recurrence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
