Abstract

This article presents news briefs on the use of information technology by different government agencies in the U.S. as of January 2005. Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) rejected criticisms that it botched an IT upgrade project with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), asserting that it has performed well and the agency is partly to blame for problems. The FBI switched the focus of the Trilogy IT modernization project and changed systems requirements after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks according to SAIC. Also in the news, the Air Force Research Laboratory wants to build a modular data network that can integrate everything from tactical unmanned aerial vehicles to ground forces. The lab is planning a broad agency announcement for its Quint Networking Technology Program. In a draft broad agency announcement, the lab said it wants to award contracts to at least two vendors or team of vendors to design, develop, evaluate and demonstrate robust and affordable multiband data link technologies for weapons, unmanned aerial vehicles and ground troops. In addition to news, a new national security directive calls for a plan to use maritime security intelligence on potential threats to U.S. interest at sea. The National Security Presidential Directive 41/Homeland Security Presidential Directive 13 was signed by President George W. Bush.
