Abstract

A recent study conducted at a tertiary-care academic hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, investigated an outbreak of Achromobacter denitrificans infections in patients. The study found that contaminated chlorhexidine-and-water solutions prepared at the hospital pharmacy were the source of the outbreak. The researchers confirmed the relatedness of the isolates using repetitive-element, sequence-based, polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR). Once the contaminated solution was removed from the hospital, no further A. denitrificans isolates were cultured from patient specimens. This research provides valuable insights into the outbreak and control of Achromobacter denitrificans in a hospital setting. [Extracted from the article]
