Abstract

The article discusses the challenges and opportunities facing the pharmacy sector in South Africa. It evaluates the profession based on various criteria, including workforce capacity, professional standards, education and training systems, self-regulation, workplace well-being, public trust and value, financial viability, and adaptability to change. The consensus is that South Africa has an inadequate pharmacy workforce, with a skewed distribution of services and a lack of resources in rural areas. Implementation and accountability of professional standards and ethics are weak, and there are concerns about ongoing competence and specialist training. The financial viability of the profession is also a concern, and there is a need for greater adaptability to meet changing health needs. Despite these challenges, there are opportunities to strengthen the pharmacy workforce and improve public health outcomes through expanded access to affordable generics, integration of pharmacists as primary care providers, public-private partnerships, and technology adoption. The article emphasizes the importance of addressing systemic inequities and social determinants of health to achieve equitable and quality pharmacy services for all South Africans.
