Abstract

A recent study conducted at University Hospital Regensburg in Germany explored a new method for determining renal function without the need for invasive procedures or blood sampling. The researchers used high doses of iohexol, a contrast agent used in computed tomography imaging, to measure glomerular filtration rate. They compared the results to estimations based on creatinine and cystatin C, finding that the iohexol method was both accurate and robust. The study demonstrates the potential of this "en passant" approach in intensive care medicine and provides a protocol for its application in clinical practice and pharmacologic studies.
