Abstract

A study conducted by Vanderbilt University Medical Center compared the outcomes of two surgical procedures for childhood intermittent exotropia (IXT), a condition where the eyes turn outward. The study followed 197 participants over an eight-year period and found that both procedures had similar rates of suboptimal surgical outcomes. However, the unilateral recession-resection (R&R) procedure showed better long-term outcomes in terms of complete or near-complete resolution and the need for reoperation. The study suggests that R&R followed by usual care may be more beneficial for basic-type childhood IXT. [Extracted from the article]
