Abstract
- A study conducted by investigators at Wake Forest University compared the impact of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) on health care costs for patients with type 2 diabetes. The study found that both procedures led to a decline in health care costs associated with type 2 diabetes, but RYGB was associated with a larger decrease in pharmacy costs and type 2 diabetes-specific office and laboratory costs. However, despite these reductions, RYGB did not result in an overall medical cost-benefit compared to SG in the first few years after surgery. The study was supported by the NIH National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases. [Extracted from the article]
