Abstract

Researchers from Normandy University conducted a study to compare the complications of diabetes and geriatric alterations in older patients with type 2 diabetes based on their prescribed therapeutic modalities over a period of 5 years. The study included 616 patients divided into three groups: an insulin-only group, a group receiving insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs, and an oral antidiabetic drug group without insulin. The study found that there were significant differences in glycosylated hemoglobin values and the frequencies of diabetic complications and geriatric alterations among the three groups. The study also noted higher frequencies of new clinical events in the insulin group, and increased mortality in the insulin group compared to the oral antidiabetic drug group. The researchers suggest that their findings could inform future studies on antidiabetic drugs with cardiovascular action in older patients with type 2 diabetes. [Extracted from the article]
