Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Evandro Chagas National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Brazil compared two diagnostic techniques, colorimetric in situ hybridization (CISH) and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), for detecting Leishmania infantum infection in dogs. The study found that both CISH and qPCR showed satisfactory sensitivities for diagnosing L. infantum in dogs, even in those without clinical signs. The combination of these two techniques increased the overall sensitivity for diagnosis. This research provides valuable insights into the diagnosis of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis, which is caused by L. infantum and dogs serve as reservoirs for this parasite.
