Abstract

A recent report from Stanford University discusses the formation of embayments and melt inclusions in quartz crystals and their potential for providing insights into volcanic processes. The researchers used numerical simulations to study the growth of embayments and inclusions and found that water is more enriched in the interior of defects on the crystal surface compared to the exterior. The composition of the entrapped melt in embayments and inclusions is enriched in incompatible components such as water and carbon dioxide. The study provides constraints on the application of embayments and inclusions in understanding volcanic processes. [Extracted from the article]
