Abstract

The text discusses the use of biologic mesh in preventing parastomal hernia (PSH) following cystectomy and ileal conduit urinary diversion. The article highlights that PSH is common, with an incidence rate of 25% to 40%. However, a randomized clinical trial did not demonstrate a significant benefit of prophylactic mesh placement within a 2-year follow-up period. The study suggests that future research focusing on high-risk patients, such as obese individuals, may show potential benefits of prophylactic mesh. Additionally, longer follow-up periods could provide further insight into the efficacy of prophylactic mesh, although it may be limited by a decrease in the number of at-risk patients due to mortality or loss to follow-up.
