Abstract

A recent study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania examined the differences between common cold coronaviruses and more severe coronaviruses like SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV. The researchers found that common cold coronaviruses induce early antiviral immune responses in the nasal epithelium, leading to viral clearance and minimal pathogenesis. In contrast, SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV have proteins that inhibit the immune response, allowing for viral replication and potentially more severe disease. The study suggests that understanding these differences in immune responses could help develop potential therapeutics for respiratory virus infections. [Extracted from the article]
