Abstract

University of Arizona researchers have conducted a study on the effects of anesthesia on immediate early gene expression in mice undergoing electroconvulsive seizure (ECS), which is an animal model for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The study found that isoflurane anesthesia prior to ECS significantly reduces rodent mortality, making it a closer model to the clinical use of ECT. The research provides immunofluorescent data on the activity responsive immediate early gene ARC in the dorsal and ventral dentate gyrus of mice. This study contributes to understanding the therapeutic mechanisms of ECT and the effects of anesthesia on gene expression. [Extracted from the article]
