Abstract

A patent has been issued for a new method and devices for obtaining liver biopsies. The method involves inserting a hollow sheath through a femoral vein into the inferior vena cava (IVC) adjacent to the liver, and then inserting a flexible biopsy needle through the sheath and into the liver to obtain a tissue sample. This approach, known as transfemoral transcaval (TFTC), is expected to be safer, easier, and more reliable than the traditional transjugular approach. The patent was assigned to Montefiore Medical Center in New York. [Extracted from the article]
