Abstract

A new report from researchers at the University of Brasilia provides insights into a whooping cough outbreak in the Brazilian Midwest region. The outbreak occurred despite high vaccination coverage, and the researchers found that the circulating strains of Bordetella pertussis, the bacteria that causes whooping cough, were different from the strain used in the vaccine. The most prevalent genotype associated with the outbreak was fim3-24/ptxP-3. These findings could help inform future vaccination programs to prevent similar outbreaks in Brazil.
