Abstract

A recent report from AstraZeneca highlights the use of biocatalysis in drug development. The researchers focused on using thermostable cytochrome P450 enzymes in bacterial membranes to replicate the metabolic pathways seen in human liver microsomes. This approach allows for the production of diverse metabolite structures and avoids the use of environmentally damaging solvents and transition metal catalysts. The study concludes that bacterial membranes provide an analogous system to liver microsomes for metabolite generation, with the added benefit of accessing a greater diversity of metabolite structures.
