Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Western Ontario examined the factors contributing to the prevalence of diarrhea among children under 5 years old in semi-arid regions of Ghana. The study found that unsafe disposal of child feces, living in the poorest households, poor self-rated health, and residing in the Wa East district were associated with a high prevalence of diarrhea. Conversely, children from the Brifo ethnicity and those from larger households were less likely to have a high prevalence of diarrhea. The researchers recommend implementing child-friendly sanitation infrastructure, behavior change communication strategies, and incentivizing water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure to address this issue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030.
