Abstract
- A recent study conducted at the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University in China highlights the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM), a rare and potentially fatal fungal infection. The researchers presented a case of a 46-year-old man with diabetes who experienced vision loss, swelling, and headaches that rapidly worsened and led to death. The infection was confirmed as a fungal Rhizopus arrhizus infection using metagenomics next-generation sequencing (mNGS). The study suggests that mNGS testing should be strongly recommended for highly suspected patients. [Extracted from the article]
