Abstract

Researchers from Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University in China have developed a simple method to measure the concentration of polymyxin B (PB) in human plasma using high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The method was validated and applied to a pharmacokinetic study in elderly patients infected with multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. The study found that both dose strategies used in the study resulted in excessive PB exposure in elderly patients, exceeding the therapeutic window recommended by guidelines. This research provides new insights into the pharmacokinetics of PB in this patient population. [Extracted from the article]
