Researchers from Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University in China have developed a simple method to measure the concentration of polymyxin B (PB) in human plasma using high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The method was validated and applied to a pharmacokinetic study in elderly patients infected with multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. The study found that both dose strategies used in the study resulted in excessive PB exposure in elderly patients, exceeding the therapeutic window recommended by guidelines.
